PRESERVING THE OCEANS: WORLD OCEANS DAY
What is World Oceans Day?
The theme of this year's World Oceans Day on 8 June 2022 is "Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean." The aim of the day is to draw global attention to current challenges related to the oceans.
The oceans connect, sustain and support us all. But their conditions are at risk, and with them the well-being of all who depend on them. Recent years have shown that we must work together to restore the balance of the oceans so that their treasures are no longer exploited, but revived and revitalized.
This is why World Oceans Day was established.
Did you know?
- The ocean covers around 71% of the earth's surface and makes our lives possible.
- Marine flora produces around 70 percent of the oxygen.
- Around 1/3 of the world's oceans are 4,000 to 5,000 meters deep - the deepest point is 11 km deep and lies in the Mariana Trench.
- Overall, the sea accounts for 96.5% of the world's water resources.
- 95 % of the oceans are unexplored.
- There are around 3 million wrecks on the seabed.
- 100 million tons of plastic are floating in the sea today.
Around 10 million tons of new plastic are added every year
A current motto at BÄR: plastic-free
Two years ago, the project for sustainable packaging optimization was launched with the aim of creating sustainable, recyclable and yet elegant packaging. Always accompanied by the question "what is good for people and the environment?"
The result is impressive: With our new packaging alternative, we combine plastic-free components to ship our BÄR shoes to you safely and, above all, sustainably. Bubble envelopes, adhesive tape, shoe bags and strapping tape have been replaced by more environmentally friendly alternatives.
VOX MARIS (lat. voice of the sea) - from waste to new life
Every day, a fishing boat catches an average of 100 kg of plastic and countless yesterday nets in its nets. Normally these would end up back in the sea, but the VOX MARIS foundation takes the nets from the fishermen to recycle them, giving them a second life and helping to clean up the world's oceans at the same time. Not so long ago, BÄR became a cooperation partner of VOX MARIS and is also contributing to the revitalization of the oceans in this context.
How you too can help protect the oceans
- Produce as little waste as possible.
Plastic is one of the biggest problems for the oceans, as a lot of plastic waste ends up in the water and pollutes the habitat of animals
- Emit less CO2 and use the bicycle more often
The oceans absorb a lot of the climate-damaging gas CO2. This changes the water in the seas, which in turn puts a strain on marine life
- Eat fish sustainably to do something about overfishing
Test your knowledge. Can you name all the oceans correctly?
