Turning old into new: shoes made from fishing nets
"Imagine" by John Lennon is a song that has never lost its relevance. It's about the fact that you can always dream of a better world. And that everyone can do something about it. John Lennon probably didn't have shoes in mind when he wrote the song - but here too, something can be done for the better. If you consider that in Germany alone, every woman buys an average of six pairs of shoes a year and men two pairs1, you can imagine that buying the right shoes can make a valuable contribution. Namely, when shoes are produced sustainably, are manufactured to a high quality and are therefore durable and repairable. BÄR's latest commitment is designed to make a small contribution to cleaning up the oceans. That is why we are supporting the VOX MARIS project with a generous donation.
The background: The sea is polluted with millions of tons of plastic, and the trend is rising, causing suffering to humans, animals and plants. We need to do something about this - for example, we can fight marine pollution together and support local communities and the circular economy. With this in mind, we support the VOX MARIS project as a sponsor and cooperation partner, whose commitment is particularly close to our hearts:
The project run by the non-profit organization BioDesign Foundation collects fishing nets discarded in the Mediterranean as well as the plastic "caught" in the nets, such as bottles, canisters and bags. To this end, containers are placed near ports and fish markets where fishermen can drop off the fishing waste, which is then weighed and paid for. Since the foundation was set up in April 2021, more than 130,000 kg of fishing nets and other fishing gear have already been collected in Chioggia. The ambitious goal for this year is to reduce the number of nets discarded in the Italian Mediterranean to zero. The plastic waste is then not destroyed, but taken to processing plants that sort, clean, process and reshape the waste - for example into textile yarn. This can be used to create new products without consuming new resources.
Auch SEAQUAL® YARN is also a high-quality yarn made from 100% recycled polyester, which is almost identical to new polyester in terms of its physical properties. In the SEAQUAL INITIATIVE, individuals, organizations and companies work together with the aim of cleaning up our oceans, raising awareness of the problem of plastic waste and recycling plastic waste - including in the clothing industry. SEAQUAL® YARN contains around ten percent recycled plastic waste from the world's oceans and ninety percent plastic waste from land sources.
As we said: turn old into new - to make our world a little better, cleaner and more sustainable. We can all do something!
In collaboration with SEAQUAL®, SEAQUAL® YARN is used and processed into the "PITO" ,the upper material is made from 100% recycled materials: 90% PET bottles and 10% SEAQUAL® MARINE PLASTIC.
